On Resolutions

So it’s been awhile since my last post…I could come up with a number of faintly justified reasons, or I could just apologize and say that my new year’s resolutions include working on the blog at least twice a week.  Fair enough?

We’re back in Hong Kong after a perfect and entirely too short trip back to the States.  Photo journal in the next post.  After flying into the Pacific Northwest, which was mired in some of the worst snowfalls since the 1950s, it’s amusing to return to Hong Kong and discover that we are in the midst of a “cold weather monsoon,” which prompted the following advisory on our weather homepage:

“As Hong Kong is being continuously affected by a cold
winter monsoon, people are advised to put on warm clothes
and to avoid adverse health effects due to the cold
weather. You must also ensure adequate indoor ventilation.

If you must go out, please avoid prolonged exposure to
wintry winds.”

Now keep in mind that the high today is forecast to be 16 degrees C (61 degrees F) and the low this morning was 11 C (52 F).  In the States we were joking about the oh-so-dramatic weather reporting (Portland’s “Arctic Blast!”, as one local station insisted on calling the snowstorm), but at least you could argue that 19 inches (48 cm) of snow in the month of December—a record!—is pretty impressive.

I don’t think you can say the same for a low temperature that really only merits long-sleeves and maybe a jacket.
